No light yet—

Posted in Lights Out, Stupid Ország at 1:17 pm by Peter Molnar

So – the fixer dudes were supposed to come yesterday to hook up my electrical metres. They didn’t come. They came today, but not to hook anything up, just to make sure, again, that they hook up will be possible. Apparently i must wait till tuesday for the next step.

It’s actually starting to get to me.

arrrgh!

Tomorrow, i may have light?

Posted in Lights Out, Stupid Ország at 8:55 am by Peter Molnar

So, i MAY have electricity tomorrow.. apparently the electrical guys are scheduled to re-install my meters. I’m not counting on it though.. The weather is supposed to be rainy all week- i guess that helps with studying. but i’m really in a good study mode, so i dont really need help with that.

Workers are also supposed to be coming to rebuild the stairs to my place. that’ll be really nice – but we’re in Hungary, so i expect that within 1 year, there’ll be nice big cracks in the cement again.

Back in Debrecen

Posted in Lights Out, Stupid Ország at 9:47 am by Peter Molnar

(NOTE: i screwed somthing up when editing the side bar, so for some reason the links dissapeared and it just says ‘themes’.. ill see if i can fix it when i have time…)

Well, after a really nice few days with relatives, im back in debrecen – without electricity. I came back to find my place in a total mess (i left it that way – but it really sucks to have a messy place), and to find that my flowers doubled in size on my porch, AND that they ripped the wall open in my WC. There’s some wiring issue, apparently, that had to be fixed before they could re-attach my electricity meters.. total bs, if you ask me – cuz they were on fine before… anyway – there is now construction going on on my place, and a hole in my wall.

I got a letter (well, the address got a letter) that the wheels are in motion, i should have power within 30 days. Yup. a month – i might even be gone by that time – which is great because they’ll hook me up just in time to get me to pay the electrical fees while i dont even live here for the summer. argh…

A MESSAGE TO EGGERT (and anybody else who has a sony-ericsson i700k):

(in response to your comment from the previous post): yeah – there IS a light function- go to the camera/video feature and press 5.

Update on the electricity…

Posted in Lights Out, Stupid Ország at 9:38 pm by Peter Molnar

Well, things are getting clearer.. the situation anyway , as everything else is still in the dark, and im STILL without power..

I just mean that the whole story is becoming clearer (haha – unlike this post, which is one of the more convoluted i’ve written in a while). Anyway, it seems most likely now that what happened is that my new neighbor moved and and went in to the office (or called them, i dunno) to arrange to have our electricity bill split. I live in a duplex – well, a house that is divided in two anyway – where both apartments have the same address. So till now, we’ve always had just one bill arrive with the landlord’s name for both places and we’ve just checked the meters and divided up who owns what. Well, the old lady moved in and arranged to have the bill split. But it looks like instead of having it split, she inadvertantly had my have removed from the system…

We had a couple of e*on guys come over this morning and look at the box. they can’t/won’t do anything untill some repairs or whatever are made to the box.. so we have to call an electrician out again (and will have to pay him again).

Whatever… i’ve escaped to relative’s places in Budapest for a long long weekend… we dont have an official long weekend here in hungary, but i figure since may 24 is such a big part of canadian life, i might as well enjoy it here…

chipping away at me…

Posted in Lights Out, Stupid Ország at 6:50 pm by Peter Molnar

well, i didnt end up in budapest this weekend afterall.. i’ve been going over to ildi’s to shower and have been eating at restaurants. I tried to figure out what i can buy that is non-perishable, but there really isn’t much, i have to say.

It seems that the electrical company is now claiming that they unplugged me because i didn’t pay and they sent out a notice (to the landlord) and since the landlord wasn’t here, they figured that i was a new owner. it’s such crap because i have been paying and this disconnection thing’s actually got nothing to do with payment.

it’s soo frustrating

Cold Shower

Posted in Lights Out, Stupid Ország at 10:23 am by Peter Molnar

Today is a BEAUTIFUL day. I need to have a shower. I have no hot water to have a shower. So I’m just gonna jump in and see what happens. The fact that it’s sooooooo hot outside is helping me make this decision. Wish me luck…

ill be right back:

Im back. Well, somehow, there was still hot water in the heater. So, i didn’t really get to experience the cold shower yet. I took a very long shower though, because being the son of wonderful mechanical engineer who designs boiler systems for buildings (hi mom) i realized that as soon as i use any of the hot water, it will be replaced with new cold water that will mix in with the remaining hot water and i wont be able to enjoy anymore showers as a result till my electricity is hooked back up.

I think i’m going to go to budapest for a few days and see relatives while this issue is resolved. As far as things stand now, it still might be up to 3 or more weeks till i have power again.

First Full day in the dark…

Posted in Lights Out, Stupid Ország at 8:00 pm by Peter Molnar

Ok.. well. im home.. tonght is my first real night trying to live in my little cave here. Last nite, i slept over at my beautiful girlfriend’s place (thanks Ildi) but tonight, i’m back home.. and it sucks.

I only have light in the middle room where my computers are. the rest of my huge place is pitch black. I’ve missplaced a bunch of things already. Those of you who know me well already know that i can be a bit absent minded at the best of times. Adding blindness to the equation is not helpful. I’ve resorted to wearing a miner’s head lamp around with me everywhere. It’s particularly useful in the kitchen where i can’t see ANYTHING otherwise.  … but i certainly can smell things. I tell you, cutting power to one’s fridge is one sure-fire way to clear those sinuses. So, all my food has gone bad. I had the forsight to take a few bags of frozen vegetables and chickenwings over to my neighbor’s place. She’s being really supportive… realizing that i dont have food, she even cooked dinner for me tonight.  unfortunately, she fried fish. i’ve never really liked fish, but it’s definately not what you want when you have no fridge. STIIIIIINKIE!

well, i’m going to wake up extra early tomorrow. I’ve really come to appreciate daylight and want to enjoy as much as i can.

(aside- i dont know why my blog is set to moderating comments – please write them and i will accept them.. i have to figure out how to make the system allow comments automatically)

E*ON update

Posted in Lights Out, Stupid Ország at 1:50 pm by Peter Molnar

Well, after a day spent accepting my plight, i went back to EON to continue my fight to reinstall my electricity. I had to get an electrician out yesterday to “ensure” that they could reinstall everything. That ended up costing me 6000 HUF. I have no idea why i needed this to be certified, because they removed the meters yesterday morning. i dunno if they honestly thought that i would be changing the system to make replacing them impossible. Anyway..

I entered the office with my handheld minidisc recorder, ready to tape their stupidity, but much to my dismay, the people i dealt with yesterday weren’t in today, and i felt that it wouldn’t be fair to go balistic on these poor people who didn’t know my situation. so i was extremely polite, and actually, this seems to have worked to my advantage.

They all realized that this is a REDICULOUS situation that i’m in and tried to help as much as they could. Still, it might be 2 weeks or more before i’m reconnected. ARGH…

ill keep you posted.

E*ON electrical company wins 1st Stupid Orszag Prize!

Posted in Lights Out, Stupid Ország at 2:05 pm by Peter Molnar

Ok… people who have been reading my somewhat regular bitchings about Hungary know how i feel about the seemingly ubiquitous hungarian stupidity. but THIS really pissed me off.

What is ‘this’ you might ask? My electricity was cut this morning (i’m writing to you on my computer, which is being powered by an extention cord connected to my neighbour’s living-room wall outlet via our windows). Anyway- my electricity was cut today, but by “cut” i dont mean that I haven’t been paying and the utility company turned it off until i pay up. nope. they actually sent a guy out this morning who physically REMOVED the electricity meter because apparently nobody lives here. WHO THE HELL DO THEY THINK HAS BEEN PAYING THE BILLS THAT THEY SEND?!!?!?!? AAAAAARGH it’s soooooooo rediculous.. They figured that since the owner (my landlord) lives in the states, nobody must be living here, so they’ll just cut the power. it makes NO SENSE! such idiots.

So, my neighbor (The landlord’s step-mom) and i went to the office to get this fixed. They sortof admited that they made a mistake, and they’ll hook it back up. but WE have to find our own electrician to contract to do it, and it’s supposed to take 1.5 months to reconnect, but since they’ll do their best to hook it up after 2 or 3 three weeks. SUCH IDIOTS.
